Below is a copy of the Grade 2 MOY benchmark.
Please open it and use this space to suggest specific changes (wording, values, diagrams) or produce a replacement question where necessary
Suggested Changes:
Question numbers
- Suggest rewording --> "Find the number that has:"
- Underline smallest and largest. Add a ? mark
-
-
-In second grade we only make change to $1.00 -- Change to "I bought an apple for 55 cents. I paid with $1.00. How much change do I get?"
- boldface AND underline "not"
-How about, "Which addition number model shows Bill getting $2.00 for 5 days of work?" -- Also, Shouldn't the addition models include dollar signs and decimals? -- $2.00 + $2.00 + $2.00, etc.
- REVISE -- "Kelly has 15 stickers. She wants to give an equal number of stickers to 5 of her friends. How many stickers should each friend get?" (avoid using words for numbers when possible... helps level the playing field for poor readers)
-A 100 number grid should be shown, like the kind we use with Everyday Math
-
- Take out--> "Billy's dad said he had to do his homework now."
-
- Can we remove the shading from the ruler? Also-- Use a font that allows 1/2 to be written with a horizontal fraction bar... numerator directly above denominator.
-Use an item that is universal like the computer screen of the classroom computer. Also, not on the diagonal -- YES, I agree... something more familar to kids than the verical measure of a TV screen... How about something standard and familiar that is not likely to change in size over the next several years... example-- "What is the length of a dollar bill?" A - 6 feet B- 6 inches C - 2 inches D- 6 yards
- "Which shape is a hexagon?"
- "Pick the other half of the drawing that would make a shape that has symmetry."
-
-What are we asking, the rule or the table? Both are blank. I agree -- if we want to test rule. leave that blank. If we want to test input, leave that blank. If both, then perhaps making this into two items is best. (one with rule, one with input)
- Better wording -- "Find the number model that shows the total of all the water bottles."
-
-OMG! We need a normal kid friendly graph!!! How about dropping the golf theme and going with something familiar to more kids...
Example: "What is the minimum number of math facts each student can solve in 5 minutes?"
